As a manager, I am required to have ‘one on one’ meetings with members of my team. I have a team of 15. You can imagine how tiresome these can get sometimes. I have heard the usual:
There are no opportunities…. the company doesn’t pay enough… there is too much work…
… and the list goes on. Bar all of this, there are some who take the bull by the horns and take responsibility for themselves. This makes me smile. But I had the most interesting conversation with one person. We got the crux of the problem as to why he was stagnating in his career and I am hoping by the end of this, I will get a point across.
We place our goals, our hopes and our dreams (across the board) in the hands of others. If something doesn’t work out, we will always blame other people or say;
It wasn’t mean to be.
And while I agree to an extent, it also depends how badly you wanted it. Sometimes not getting what you want, puts you in line to get something better. We will never go inside ourselves and take a look at the part we played in the whole lot. And if you can take a step back, you will see that much of the time, it starts with you. You play the lead role in your life. Whether you decide to give up or not, that is up to you. You control how determined you are. Some of the most successful people were shot down many times, but they got back up and went for it again.
“Walt Disney was fired by a newspaper editor because he “lacked imagination and had no good ideas.”
“Albert Einstein didn’t speak until age four and didn’t read until age seven. His teachers labeled him “slow” and “mentally handicapped.”
“Dr. Seuss’ first book was rejected by 27 different publishers.”
“Steven Spielberg got rejected from film school … three times”
(source of the above quotes: 26 Successful People who failed at first)
You need to ask yourself why you may have wanted something. If we are speaking career, you could get something because you know someone, but when you get the job, you have been set up to fail because you actually have no idea what to do. Sure, you can learn, but often you are thrown into that deep end and you must swim. As harsh as this may sound, if you want to climb any corporate ladder, there is no space for ‘poor me’ attitudes. There is just no time. Things move fast, things need to get done and the last thing you want to do is fail. So if you find you don’t get what you want, see what area’s you may be lacking and work on this.
The universe will always provide. Sometimes it’s a kick in the butt to get moving. Sometimes we are challenged to improve on things, to test our strength or patience. If something is too good to be true, it might just be. This isn’t always the case though. Sometimes being at the right place at the right time can work to your advantage. We need to meet the universe half way. Life doesn’t have to be about hard work all the time, but if you want something, you need to take control of your life and go get it. You need to be positive and envision the outcome and take the steps to get there.
One of the questions I asked in the meetings is; “What DO YOU want to do?”. And although there is an idea, many are not too sure.
If you don’t know where you are going. I ask with tears in my eyes, HOW WILL YOU KNOW HOW TO GET THERE!!? I cannot show you the way to your destination if you do not know where that destination is.
If you draw a picture of your euphoria and you draw all the elements of what, in your mind, looks like the perfect life for you, what would it look like? And if you are not there yet, draw a road to get there. What will you do along the way to move closer to that ideal? As you start to draw this picture, you draw yourself doing various things and when your picture is complete, you will see that in order to move closer, there are things YOU need to do. You will find you aren’t drawing pictures of other people doing things for you. You may have to ask people for help, but ultimately, it is you that is doing all the… well… DOING! As soon as you realise that it is all in YOUR hands, you are one step closer to that Euphoria and you have the power to go forth and conquer.
One of the things that was noted is that ideas are never taken seriously. So I asked the questions; “Did you document anything?”; “Who did you take it to?”; “Was there any follow up?”. To all the “so what did you do?” type questions, I got; “No”. Ok, then, why? And then the problem was revealed. During the rigorous over analysis, it was ascertained that there were risks. And then… And then….. Well, and then no follow through because said individual had already assumed that the risk was far too great and stopped before he even tried. He had envisioned failure before he had even given anything a chance. You manifest your beliefs, you are that powerful! So who is responsible for idea’s not being taken seriously? He is! And why is this so? Because HE NEVER TOOK HIMSELF and his OWN IDEAS Seriously. If you have no faith in yourself, how can you expect others to have faith in you?
For me, my career is not my number one. I just go with the flow and will take on responsibilities to strengthen my weak areas. I am not driven by money, I am driven more by personal growth. Some would say that it is unfair that I would get this position if I didn’t really want it. But I wanted to develop certain areas of myself and I knew that having to deal with 15 different personalities would be one incredible challenge. The job title is nothing in my life. When I drive out in the afternoons, I am not Candice Peetz, Operations Manager for Change Management. I am Candice Peetz, AWESOME INDIVIDUAL, Mother to Kelso, Daughter of Brent and Deborah, Girlfriend to George, Sister to Claudette, Jason and Gary, Aunty to Sheridon, Tayla, Hannah and Daniel, and the list goes on. But Most of all, I AM MYSELF. I am the main attraction in my world. I am also the last to take risks. But sometimes I just go ahead. My motto is sometimes;
“FAKE IT UNTIL YOU MAKE IT”. “SHOW NO FEAR, SHOW NO WEAKNESS and TAKE NO PRISONERS”.
My heart races sometimes, but because I firmly believe in my own abilities and know where my limits are, I do just go for it. If I feel I can’t do something, I consider what skills I need to obtain. I spent enough years waiting around for others to determine my destination and the truth is, no one else can. They have their own goals to achieve and they have their own destination. Guess what? I got nowhere!
Your own attitude determines your altitude.
And if you want something badly enough, you can have it. You need to get out there, go and grab the opportunities. You need to be the one who stands out from the crowd. No one can radiate your own AWESOMENESS like YOU CAN.
Go on – BE AWESOME and Keep Shining! ♥
